Mondizen offsets CO₂ emissions caused by shipping our products. We sponsor environmentally friendly projects that reduce global CO₂ emissions by the same amount as our shipping. So the result of shipping products with Mondizen is "carbon neutral" and does not contribute to global warming. 

Today, it is simple to send products around the world. Today, we also know that climate change is happening. One of the causes of climate change is human economic activities that release greenhouse gases such as CO₂ into the atmosphere. Global trade increases CO₂ emissions. Globalisation offers many advantages to humanity. When people travel there is an opportunity to share cultures and increase understanding and compassion betwen people living in different parts the world.

There are also risks in globalisation, it could lead to the uniformity of cultures, and this would be a great loss to humanity. But globalisation can also offer access to authentic ingredients of every culture, from anywhere in the world. Mondizen contributes to this vision. 

We believe the benefits of global trade can make the world a better place for everyone. We searched for a way to offset the negative environmental impacts of shipping our products globally. Mondizen does not want to make a bad situation worse and we believe this is important to our customers.

How does Mondizen offset CO₂ emissions ?

We partnered with Carbonfund.org which is a non-profit organisation collecting funds for projects that reduce CO₂ emissions. For every shipment Mondizen calculates the resulting CO₂ emissions. Every quarter we send our shipping data to Carbonfund.org. This information is audited by Carbonfund.org at their discretion. Carbonfund.org then calculates the cost of offsetting the CO₂ emissions through projects that have been certified by international environmental agencies. Mondizen then donates to Carbonfund.org to match the cost of offsetting our CO₂ emissions.

How does Mondizen calculate CO₂ emissions ?

We developed an application integrated into the Mondizen website that automates the calculation of CO₂ emissions. The emissions are calculated for each shipment based on the shipping distance from France to the destination country.

We calculate the average shipping distance between these two countries, so the CO₂ emissions are an estimate for a particular shipment. The average shipping distance is calculated based on the distribution of the population in major cities of the destination country, so the internal shipping distance is also accounted for.

We calculate the CO₂ emissions per ton per kilometer, assuming that shipments in Europe are transported by truck and shipments beyond Europe will be transported by airplane. The exact numbers we use are recommended by Carbonfund.org:

• Airplane (air cargo) 500g of CO₂ per kilometer per ton
• Modern truck 105g of CO₂ per kilometer per ton

Who pays for this ?

Mondizen pays the cost of the CO₂ offsets, we do not add any charges to your purchase. Of course our donations to Carbonfund.org reduce Mondizen's profits.
